Bright, glare-free walls ensure safe traffic in the Schemelsberg tunnel near Heilbronn. To achieve this, the 676 metre-long tube was given a highly resistant coating - which is also easy to clean and extends maintenance intervals.
The Schemelsberg Tunnel is part of the Weinsberg bypass near Heilbronn. Around 20,000 vehicles - mainly commuters - use this section of the B39 every day. The 676-metre-long tunnel was modernised in 2025 and equipped with the latest safety technology and rescue tunnels.

Protection for the inner walls
The side walls of the tunnel inner shells - a total area of 4,500 square metres - were given a new protective coating up to a height of four metres: StoConcrete Protect Prime TU 100 is a tested and approved surface protection system OS-C (OS 4), i.e. an epoxy resin coating with increased impermeability for surfaces that are not suitable for vehicle traffic. It equalises the surface and closes pores and cavities. This makes the building fabric easy to clean and maintain and provides lasting protection. This in turn is particularly economical, reduces lockout times and increases safety in the tunnel.
In addition, the new coating protects the tunnel from damage caused by exhaust fumes and water-soluble pollutants. The surface is now also highly mechanically resistant and resistant to strong chemical attack, alkalis, hydrocarbons and petrol. The excellent cleanability and low susceptibility to soiling are also certified with the top grade in accordance with EN 11998.
Only water gets on the wall
The tunnel walls can be cleaned with little water and no chemical cleaning agents. Thanks to the light-coloured, non-reflective surface, visibility in the tunnel is good, which ensures safety. The StoPox TU 100 coating also prevents unwanted "embellishments": It fulfils the requirements for an anti-graffiti system (AGS 1) in accordance with the TL/TP-ING of the Federal Highway Research Institute.
The entrance and exit of the Schemelsberg tunnel were also sealed with StoPur WV 60. The material is highly UV-resistant and thus prevents yellowing caused by sunlight.
