Flórián Square Overpasses Reconstruction – StoWaterproof Traffic Liquid BA 2000 System

The Flórián Square overpasses are among the most important transport structures in the northern part of Budapest, Hungary. The bridge system, providing a direct connection between Szentendrei Road and Árpád Bridge, carries tens of thousands of vehicles every day and plays a vital role in maintaining the capital’s north-south traffic corridor.

The structure consists of two separate dual-carriageway road bridges. The northern bridge (No. B906) is 322.15 meters long and 10.3 to 11.24 metres width, while the southern bridge (No. B905) is 364.5 metres long and 10.3 to 11.24 metres wide, both are reinforced concrete structures comprising 11 spans. Constructed in the early 1980s, the bridges required comprehensive rehabilitation after more than four decades of service. Continuous heavy traffic loading, exposure to precipitation and the long-term effects of de-icing salts used during winter maintenance had significantly contributed to the deterioration of the structures.

The overpasses are located in a particularly sensitive and unique environment. Beneath the structures lie significant Roman-era archaeological remains, together with an on-site museum that presents these findings and is accessible via the pedestrian underpass. As a result, the rehabilitation works must be carried out with special care to protect and preserve the archaeological heritage. Throughout the construction process, safeguarding the integrity of the Roman remains constitutes a key project requirement and an important consideration in the planning and execution of the works.

The project owner of the reconstruction project is Budapesti Közlekedési Központ Zrt. (BKK Zrt.) (Budapest Transport Centre). Specialised planning services were provided by FŐMTERV Zrt.. The application of the StoFloor Traffic Elastic BA 2000 waterproofing system was realised by the specialised trading company Hídtechnika Kft., all located in the Hungarian capital Budapest.

The StoWaterproof Traffic Liquid BA 2000 system, specifically designed for waterproofing heavily trafficked reinforced concrete bridges and bridge structures beneath mastic asphalt surfacing, provides a reliable and durable solution for long-term structural protection. The system is being applied across the entire bridge deck area of 7,627 square metres, ensuring enhanced resistance against water ingress and contributing significantly to the long-term durability and service life of the structure while ensuring the safe and uninterrupted operation of one of Budapest’s busiest transportation hubs.

The rehabilitation works were executed in two major phases. The reconstruction of the southern bridge commenced in March 2025 and followed by the refurbishment of the northern bridge. Project completion is scheduled for August 2026.

StoWaterproof Traffic Liquid BA 2000 waterproofing is an approved system by Magyar Közút Zrt. and has a Hungarian National Technical Approval in accordance with road engineering specification e-UT No. 07.03.25 (Insulation of Reinforced Concrete Slab Bridges and Pavement Surfacing).
